Hamilton Island is an international tourist and sailing resort destination located 16 kilometres off the coast of Queensland in the Whitsunday Passage.
Oakdale Group tendered and won the project formwork package for the new Club, and commenced work in 2008.
The yacht club is designed over three levels to take advantage of its location, waterfront views, and presence in the Island marina precinct. The distinctive design of the building is based on nautical themes, and this is expressed in the club’s unique built form and finishes.
Oakdale managed the project from Beresfield New South Wales via their Queensland yard and office facilities located at Yatala (near the Gold Coast, Queensland).
Project challenges for Oakdale were:
- Remote project location;
- Logistics;
- ‘One off’ design of architectural feature columns in non-standard shapes. These were designed in the shape of a ships keel and tiller
Oakdale were able to respond and meet these challenges through:
- Availability of skilled trades in our NSW and Queensland operations enabled us to respond and meet the required labour demands – portability of labour;
- Availability and placement of an on-site supervisor & area manager to Hamilton Island from our Queensland operations – hands on team on the job;
- Availability of our Queensland yard office to assist with HR matters in mobilising and managing our project workforce – face to face contact;
- Ability to use our own interstate transport fleet to supply the project with pre-fabricated ready to assemble formwork – convenient yard and haulage facilities in NSW & Queensland;
- Availability of logistics staff in NSW to coordinate our transport fleet with barge deliveries ex Shute Harbour off the Queensland mainland to Hamilton Island and return – good logistics;
- Availability of our workshop facilities in NSW to design, coordinate and supply prefabricated formwork for both standard and non-standard work – provide turnkey operation that enables quick site assembly and job savings
